IME Consultants (IMEC) was engaged by Boliden Tara Mines Ltd (BTML) to provide engineering design and project management services to their 0750 Underground Workshop Project.
BTML operate the largest underground zinc mine in Europe (9th largest worldwide) in Tara and as part of continuing mine development, underground infrastructure needs to be expanded deeper with the mine to support operations in an effective and efficient manner.
A key area of infrastructure for modern mechanised mining is the need for maintenance facilities to ensure the mining fleet remains in good working condition. Tara completed a feasibility study which determined that an existing maintenance facility located at the 0750 level within the mine required expansion to service the increasing fleet size and activity within that area of the mine.
BTML engaged IMEC to complete multi-discipline engineering services to take the concept level designs completed by BTML to detailed level enabling procurement and construction phases (respectively) of the project to be progressed (by BTML).
IMEC completed full civil designs for the slab and pit areas, hydrocarbon storage and treatment areas, hydrocarbon dispensing systems, run-off water treatment and various other civil, mechanical and structural design components.
IMEC project managed the design phase of the works with regular site meetings, investigations, stakeholder analysis and agreed a fixed price contract for the works. The end result for BTML was delivery on time and on budget for the design of the workshop facility.
