Lisheen Mines Geotechnical Support

IME Consultants (IMEC) was engaged by The Lisheen Mine (owned and operated by Vedanta) to provide various geotechnical engineering design & management services as part of their Mine Closure Project.

The Lisheen Mine was one of the largest underground zinc producers in Europe over its life since commencement of production in 1999. However due to declining reserves and grade, closure of the operation commenced in 2015.

IMEC were engaged to provide design support of underground bulkhead walls which would be used to allow flooding into redundant parts of the mine. This enabled large pumping stations to be decommissioned as part of the ongoing closure plan. IMEC completed structural design review of the hitched bulkheads to ensure the design complied with industry best practices and within the relevant design code criteria.

In addition to design support engagements, IMEC completed site management and construction coordination of backfilling projects to fill redundant areas within the mine including the main decline portal area to mitigate any surface depression or ground instability as a result of any remnant excavations post mining.
